The History of C-8-1: Did You Know?

Pre-Military Roots: Before the California National Guard established Camp Merriam (now Camp SLO), this site was part of the vast ranching acreage of the Central Coast. C-8-1 is a surviving piece of that era, representing the transition from California’s "Rancho" history to its military future.

The "General’s Choice": Because of its spacious layout and sturdy construction, it was hand-selected as a residence for Generals. It was designed not just as a home, but as a site for "official entertaining"—a tradition that continues today when Soldiers gather on its patio.

Architectural Survivor: While much of the camp was rapidly built up during the WWII "Great Construction" boom to house thousands of troops, C-8-1 remains a rare example of the more permanent, high-quality residential architecture reserved for the post’s leadership.
